Highlights

  • As a youth, competed in nearly every sport that was accessible at low cost: football, rink bandy, bandy, running, cross-country skiing, high jump, long jump and swimming — especially swimming.
  • Oulunsalo municipal cross-country champion at approximately age 15 — when the leading group followed the wrong course markings.
  • Finnish National Swimming Championships (Oulu): finalist in 100m and 200m breaststroke in 1984, achieved through independent training outside elite coaching groups. Club: Oulun Uimaseura.
  • Finnish Defence Forces Swimming Championships 1987 (Kajaani): 2nd place, 200m breaststroke
  • Finnish national record, 4 x 50m medley relay (1988, Oulu).
    Team members: Jaakko Castren (butterfly), Marko Oinas (backstroke), Jokke Härmä (breaststroke), Mika Ervasti (freestyle).
  • Division I championship in water polo, Oulun Lohet (goalkeeper), 1988
